11th graders,
Something to be aware of:
Beginning in Spring 2013, the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) writing tests will be administered online. In preparation, the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) plans to field-test online versions of the writing tests in Spring 2012. All students who are scheduled to take the grade 5, grade 8 or end-of-course writing tests in Spring 2012 are expected to participate in the online field-test, in addition to the regular paper/pencil test.
An Online Writing Practice Tool that mirrors the interface students will use to respond to the direct writing prompt is available on the VDOE website. Teachers are encouraged to visit the link listed below and use the practice tool with their students throughout the 2011-12 school year.
Here is the link: SOL Online Practice Tool
11th graders,
To ease your efforts in the computer lab, download the file below for a template of the research outline. Remember to transfer all of the information from your notecard (including the citation) to the outline so I can see what evidence you'll use to prove your arguments.

As we begin to draft the research paper at home, the template I want you all to use has been uploaded to the "Research" section on the left.
Don't get points taken off needlessly when you submit, make sure you use this template to ensure your paper is in proper MLA format.

11th graders,
Well, we have an (un)lucky snow day. If you are at home working on your research paper, feel free to email me what you've been working on and I'll try my best to comment.
Keep in mind that I don't have WordPerfect at home, so Microsoft Word would be preferable.
Using your knowledge of Politics and the English Language, apply Orwell's six rules to a contemporary speech or debate. After viewing the political text, determine whether or not your subject sticks to Orwell's rules. If not, how can they change their speech to adhere to Orwell's rules? And, if they do adhere to the rules, how do they do so?
Write a 1-2 page reflection in which you analyze the speech in relation to Orwell's essay. Be sure to discuss the effect of this bad (or good!) langugage on the American public.
Videos of the speeches and debates can be found on YouTube, and transcripts can be found on most news websites as well. You will be graded on how well you identify rules, and the analysis of your evidence.
Good luck!
11th graders,
Midterms are rapidly approaching -- be sure to have all the words for the big test.
Check your lists to make sure that you have all 60 words with thorough definitions. If you do not, please download the entire list below to ensure that you have everything that you need to study:

Short and sweet: the website is safe.
Do not worry -- I have requested that Google revisit my site and unflag it as containing malware.
One of the videos I had embedded on the main page was causing Google to think my website was fishy.
For Dorks: The Vimeo video was throwing the malware error, the YouTube videos are magically "safe." :)
